Joshua Code: Chapter 35 – The Book of Ruth

Ruth 1:16-Ruth 1:17 NKJV

But Ruth said: “Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, And there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me.”

Book of Ruth Notes:

Historically Speaking: The Moabites – Ruth 1:1-4

  1. Israel and the Moabites did not have a happy history.
  2. The people of Moab were descendants of one of the children of Lot conceived with one of his daughters when his daughters tricked him (Genesis 19:30-38), and they became a thorn in the flesh, not only refusing to let the Israelites pass through their land on their way to Caanan, but leading the Israelites into immorality and idolatry and causing a plague of judgment that killed 24,000 Hebrews (Numbers 25:1-9).
  3. Although the Law of Moses did not explicitly forbid an Israelite from marrying a Moabite, it was well understood that Moabites and their descendants were excluded from the congregation of Israel for 10 generations because of their idolatry (Deut. 23:1-4).
  4. This alone should have been enough to dissuade Eimelek from arranging Moabite wives for Mahion and Killon.

Women of the Bible

  1. Sarah, Abraham’s wife
  2. Miriam, Moses wife.
  3. Ruth and Esther – one married an Israelite and the other married a Gentile
  4. Mary, who was visited by an angel that she would be the virgin mother of Jesus prophesied hundreds of years earlier.
  5. In His early ministry, Jesus often took time to tend to the plight of marginal  who had been marginalized, to those who had suffered the burden of making ends meet in a society with very little opportunity for women to provide for themselves.
  6. On some occasions, these women included prostitutes (Luke 7:36-50), those who had a series of husbands (John 4), and the ritually unclean (Mark 5:25).
  7. Jesus never cared what the religious elite said about Him – or these women.
  8. He treated them with tenderness and dignity.
  9. While men are called as leaders of their households and caregivers of their wives (Ephesians 5:25-33), they are not elevated above their wives in some sort of spiritual ranking.
  10. The place for women in the Bible is prominent!

Levirate Marriage

  1. According to the Law of Moses, a brother (levirate means “husband’s brother”) was required to marry the widow of his brother if he was with no male heir.
  2. If the deceased had no brother, then his nearest male relative – often a cousin –was expected to fulfill this role.
  3. The first born from the union of the widow and her new husband would be considered the deceased husband’s heir and would inherit the name and property. Of
